Variable Inductance

PHY 210

A unique apparatus to discover inductance.

Learning of magnetism and especially the topic of electric generation of magnetic fields, necessarily

passes through the experimental study of tensioned coils whose inductance can be measured and

related to theory when Variable Inductance is used. Two iron cores are also supplied; solid iron core

when DC supplied and laminated core when AC supplied.

Equipment needed:

Power Supply 10 A

Connecting leads

Equipment suggested:

Magnetic Field Sensor

Digital Multimeter

Experiments:

Generation of magnetic fields by flowing currents

Role of iron cores

Study of a variable inductance

Study of RL, RLC circuits
